About Paul

Paul studied at the Royal College of Music, the University of California, and then completed his doctorate at the RCM. He has appeared as a soloist in the UK, Europe, Russia, USA, India, and China, performing pieces written for him by Oliva, Roxburgh, Jolliffe, Whitty, Kittos, Yeats, McDowell, and Sutton-Anderson.

His CD, "New Ground" (rated ‘excellent’ by the BBC), was followed by "Antares," featured on "The World of the Oboe," and Carpenter’s Double Concerto "Doubles" with Linda Merrick. Concerto performances include works by Holliger, Lutoslawski (including performances with the composer), Oliva, Carpenter, and Roxburgh.

With rarescale, he has made recordings and premiered hundreds of works across the UK and Europe. He is also the oboist with Sounds Positive, with whom he has given over sixty premieres.

Paul’s compositions include solos, chamber pieces, a Triple Concerto, and the Concerto "Hohler Fels," written for Karin de Fleyt, flautist with the Stockhausen Estate, which was premiered and recorded in 2013.

From 1998 to 2006, he was Head of Wind, Brass & Percussion at Trinity College of Music and a Council Member for SPNM. In 2007, he relocated to the Royal Northern College of Music to be Head of Wind, Brass, and Percussion, and in 2013, he was promoted to Vice Principal and awarded Fellowship of the Conservatoire.

He moved to France in 2017 and now pursues a freelance career. In 2022, he became a Board member of LMFL (where he has taught since 2007) and Executive Director of Michael Oliva & Musicians.
