Matthew Gibson Double bassist

Meet the orchestra: double bassist Matthew Gibson

Matthew Gibson studied Double Bass at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Kevin Rundel and Tom Martin. He started playing with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1990 and was offered a job in the bass section in 1992.

Working with the LSO over the last eighteen years has taken Matthew to all the great concert halls of the world with many top conductors and soloists.

A large part of Matthew's time with the orchestra is spent working for 'LSO Discovery', the LSO's education and outreach department.

This has involved working with children, students and adults of all ages, people with disabilities in the community and a good deal of education work abroad when the orchestra has been on tour.

He regularly coaches the bass sections of the Royal College and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Matthew has also served on the Board of Directors of the London Symphony Orchestra for past ten years, the last four of which as Vice-Chairman.
