dazzling display of the instrument's bel canto qualities." David studied at the Royal College of
Music in London, later in Prague with the renowned soloist and teacher
Frantisek Posta (Czech Philharmonic Orchestra) and is one of Britain's most
high profile bassists. He is demand throughout Britain, Europe and America as
a soloist and teacher and has recently performed in Spain, Italy, Denmark,
Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Texas and Montana. He was a
juror at the 11th Gregora Double Bass Competition (Kromeriz) and in 2003 was
the UK juror at the Brno International Double Bass Competition. David teaches at Southampton University and Wells Cathedral School and
was Performer-in-Residence at the Royal Northern College of Music in
Manchester from 2002-3. He is also a founder member of Basso! Basso!, Red,
Hot & Blue! and Basso Bravura! In 2002 David received an award from
the David Walter Charitable Trust of New York for his pioneering work as a
soloist, teacher, publisher and commissioner of new music, and since 1994
almost 200 works have been written for him. He co-ordinated and set the grade
and diploma syllabus for Trinity College
London International Examinations Board and works tirelessly to
perform new repertoire for double bass and to expand the quantity, quality
and breadth of the solo repertoire. David founded the publishing company Recital Music in 1986, The British
& International Bass Forum in 1994 and is Artistic Director of Bass-Fest
and Double Bass 2000. For two years he was Consultant Bass Editor for Double
Bassist magazine and has written for Bass News, Music Teacher and The Strad. In 2004 David gave the
premiere of a new concerto by Eric Funk with the String Orchestra of the
Rockies (USA) and in 2003/4 also gave recitals, masterclasses and workshops
at the University of Montana, Rotterdam Conservatoire, RNCM (Manchester),
University of North Texas and Paris Conservatoire. Invitations in 2005/6
include University of North Texas, Granada Double Bass Festival, Bass-Fest
France, Bassissimo (Denmark), Beijing Conservatoire and 10th Porto Double
Bass Festival (Portugal). back
