Champa Kumar
hails from a family deeply involved in music. She was initiated into Carnatic Music at
the age of five by her mother Smt. Banumathi Ramakrishnan and later learnt from
Sangeetha Vidvan Valliyur Sri. R. Gurumoorthy. Presently, she is under the able guidance of Smt. Jaya
Krishnan. She has participated in
several music competitions and is the winner of the All India Radio Music
competitions (1971) in both Light and Light-classical categories. Presently she is
teaching a number of students at various levels in Carnatic music. She leads a group
called “Champakapriya” comprising of ladies trained in devotional music. The group has performed in many places in
Chennai (Madras) and Tamilnadu. Champa Kumar
specializes in “Thirumarai” singing. She is a disciple
of Sami Dandapani of Dharmapuram Adeenam and a B-High Grade artist of All
India Radio-Chennai in devotional
music. Recently She was given
the title “Thevara Isai Mani” by the Aranarul Trust. She is also
teaching Thirumarai in Dharmapuram Adeenam for a number of children and
adults. She has given
